Trauma-Informed Mentorship

The #MeToo movement is more than a hashtag: It’s an essential reminder that sexual assault is a prevalent problem. 1 in 6 women have experienced sexual abuse in their lifetimes, and a sexual assault happens every 98 seconds in the U.S.

And those are the reported cases!

Some survivors don’t report their assault for fear of retaliation, shame, or afraid of not being believed. We have no idea how many people never report their assault, but the #MeToo movement is shedding light on this pervasive problem around the world.

The trauma of sexual abuse leaves an imprint that manifests itself in the mind, body, and soul.

Trauma causes our brain to problem solve – sending messages to our muscles and organs to be ready to fight the problem or flee from it. After an assault, survivors find it laborious to feel safe inside their body. Trauma shatters your sense of security, your attachment to others and makes it difficult to feel hopeful again.

Sexual assault creates a profound loss of control over your body, so a practice that allows you to engage in kindness toward yourself and your body is essential.

Trauma-informed yoga provides survivors the opportunity to transcend trauma from the body by combining the elements of breathing, poses, and mindfulness in a gentle, meditative yoga practice geared toward trauma sufferers.

Trauma-informed yoga helps survivors reconnect with their bodies, emotions, and gives them agency to feel strong again.
This form of mind-body movement offers a safe and accessible avenue for survivors to heal by gently working through the pain without having to articulate how they feel.
